HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Huntsville Police Department will host its annual Back-to-School Supply Drive from June 1- July 29. The department is seeking donations of school supplies, including pencils, pens, markers, notebooks and binders.
Donations will go to Free 2 Teach, a Huntsville nonprofit that provides free school supplies to local teachers.
"You might say, 'Oh, my goodness, it's the summer. Why are we talking about school?'" said Alison Kling, executive director for Free2Teach. "Our teachers will be shopping on July 10. We have 100 teachers a day over the summer. They are filling their carts. They are getting their classrooms ready. And this is a huge piece of that. This is like Christmas in July."
Items can be dropped off at the following locations through Saturday, July 29:
Public Safety Complex: 815 Wheeler Ave., Huntsville, AL
North Precinct: 4014 N. Memorial Pkwy., Huntsville, AL
South Precinct: 7900 Bailey Cove Road, Huntsville, AL
West Precinct: 2110 Clinton Ave., Huntsville, AL
Don't forget the feeding programs this summer!
Known as "Break for a Plate," the annual summer break feeding program will see nutritious meals distributed at 10 summer learning sites and 3 community sites. It begins this week and runs throughout the summer to ensure children don't go hungry without the regular school-year lunch programs:
- The first half of the program will operate during summer learning activities from June 5 through June 29, 2023.
- The second half of the program will operate from July 3 through July 13, 2023
- The program will operate on a 4-day work week (Monday-Thursday).
- The Program will be closed for holidays on Monday, June 19th and Tuesday, July 4th.
