HPD flooded with calls over July 4th fireworks in city limits

Lieutenant Michael Johnson says between 8 p.m. and midnight they averaged 40 calls an hour.

Huntsville Police officers were flooded with calls this 4th of July.

Lieutenant Michael Johnson says between 8 p.m. and midnight they averaged 40 calls an hour. These calls were because of fireworks. People were shooting them off within city limits, which is against the law.

Johnson says most of the time officers were working to make sure they were dealing with fireworks and not gunshots. Most of them turned out to be fireworks.

He warns this takes officers away from emergencies.

“If you’re in city limits you cannot shoot fireworks,” Johnson said. “Again, it still overwhelmed us with the number of calls. We tried to use discretion, definitely those that were being reckless we did take some kind of enforcement action.”

Johnson says between 8 p.m. and 3 a.m. HPD got about 230 calls to investigate fireworks.
