Man shot after standoff with Huntsville police identified

An hours-long standoff between a man on the roof of a Five Points business ended when the man, who allegedly pointed a gun at officers, was shot by police.

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama — UPDATE: The man shot by police after a standoff in Five Points has been identified as 41-year-old Bradley A. Pugh.

Huntsville police released a statement on the incident, which updates earlier information from the department:

"Huntsville Police are currently investigating an overnight police shooting involving 41 yr. old Bradley A. Pugh. HEMSI was staged at the Command Post and attempted to render aid to Pugh. He succumbed to his injuries sustained in the incident.

"Just after 9:30pm on November 16th officers were called regarding a possible gunman on the roof of a business at 212 Andrew Jackson Way. When officers arrived they witnessed a person on the roof with a gun, later identified as Pugh. Officers secured the area by evacuating citizens close by and blocking several roads to protect the driving public. HPD notified media of the ongoing situation for public safety.

"The HPD CNRT (Crisis Negotiation Response Team) responded as well as SWAT. After several hours of negotiation Pugh came down the ladder on the side of the business. Officers attempted to apprehend him when he began to flee on foot into a residential area. During the foot chase, Pugh pulled the handgun from his waistband. HPD personnel were involved in a shooting with Pugh at that time.

"There is still an on-going investigation into the shooting. As in any police related shooting, there will be an Incident Review Board reviewing the facts of this incident at a later time. More information can be provided when that review is complete."

This release updates information originally given by Lt. Tony McElyea shortly after the incident.

UPDATE: The standoff in Five Points between police and an alleged gunman ended with officers shooting the man at about 1:30am. Police confirmed the man is dead.

Madison County coroner Dr. Tyler Berryhill said that an autopsy is being completed Tuesday morning and that the cause of death was "the result of fatal gunshot wounds sustained during the incident."

According to Huntsville Police Lt. Tony McElyea, they responded to a call of a man with a gun on the roof of Ted's BBQ in Five Points. He said police confirmed that the man was holding a gun and that they were able to make contact with him by phone and communicated with him "for a lengthy period of time." McElyea said the man came down a ladder and police believed that there would be a peaceful resolution and the man would be giving up.

He continued, saying that as the man was coming down a ladder from the building and a peaceful resolution was expected when he "took a firearm out, pointed it at officers, and officers were then forced to fire on him." He said the suspect was down and given immediate aid by HEMSI.

When asked if the man coming down the ladder was part of the negotiation process, McElyea said that the man was in contact with negotiators and they believed there would be a peaceful resolution.
