Obtaining unitary status within Huntsville City Schools appears to be a long way off.

It’s the goal of a consent order put in place by a federal judge to ensure all students, despite race, receive an equal education.

A meeting today provided an update on where the district stands in its compliances, and while significant improvements have been made, there is still much work to be done.

A full courtroom listened to updates on where Huntsville City Schools stands with a Federal Court Order.

The district continues to face challenges, particularly with disparities in academic performance and testing.

From the 2014-15 school year and beyond, there is still a gap between black and white students’ test scores.

Today’s report was not much of a change for some parents. Both the Justice Department and HCS pointed out improvements and continued gaps.

Huntsville City Schools will present an annual update on the consent order to the Justice Department in November.
