Huntsville launches campaign to push for litter-free city

The campaign aims to get community support for Huntsville's roads and parks clean.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Huntsville officials and the Huntsville Green Team are joining forces to fight against litter with their latest initiative, #LitterFreeHSV.

The campaign aims to get community support in maintaining the cleanliness of Huntsville's roads and parks. City Council President David Little talks about the importance of addressing the city's litter issue as its population grows.

"Huntsville's a great town. Everybody knows that. We're the we say we're the Star of Alabama, but we drive down our roadways and you see litter just it's unsightly and you know I know it's going to be addressed," David Little said. "But you know, we got visitors that might be here for a long weekend. We want them to see and enjoy clean roads and public spaces."

Huntsville police also talks about the dangers of litter, highlighting that road debris can distract drivers.

"Roads are filled with all sorts of potential hazards, but one hazards that's often overlooked is road debris. It may seem like a minor inconvenience, but it can have serious consequences," Capt. Stephen Anderson said. "It's why the Huntsville Police Department is proud to stand with Green Team and their efforts to educate citizens as well as visitors to save lives, prevent damage and keep us all beautiful."

The #LitterFreeHSV initiative encourages people to be proactive by properly securing trailers and not throwing out trash onto the roads. Residents are also urged to report any debris or litter they encounter on roadways and to consider volunteering with the Huntsville Green Team.

Green Team also offers tips to drive away litter:

  • When hauling items, tarp your truck
  • Follow overfill ordinances
  • Secure any loose items or trash
  • Add 53-CLEAN (256-532-5326) to your contacts to report litter to Green Team
