Murder charge following Binford Dr. shooting that killed unborn child

The shooting happened around 3:30 p.m. Saturday in a Southwest Huntsville neighborhood and killed a 24-year-old woman's unborn baby.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Police have arrested a man in connection with a weekend shooting that injured a woman and killed her unborn baby.

Officials charged 27-year-old Dequerius Amar Clayborn with reckless murder and first-degree assault. 

The victim in the shooting, identified as a 24-year-old woman, was pregnant when she was hit by gunfire. She was taken to Huntsville Hospital. Officers said her unborn child did not survive. The woman remains in stable condition.

Investigators believe Clayborn mishandled his firearm and accidentally shot the woman. 

He remains in the Madison County Jail as of Monday afternoon with no bond.

Huntsville Police confirm one person has been detained in connection with a shooting that happened Saturday afternoon.

Officers say they responded to the 200 block of Binford Dr. south of Clinton Ave. just after 3:30 p.m.  

They reported finding a single victim that had suffered a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.  

It is not known what led to the shooting or if the person detained will face charges. An investigation is ongoing.
