Huntsville's $5 spay & neuter program

The Fixin’ Alabama Spay/Neuter program in Huntsville offers spaying and neutering procedures for as low as $5 for eligible individuals.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — As spring and summer approach, Huntsville Animal Services is preparing for a surge in kitten admissions at the shelter. According to Huntsville Animal Services, they manage multiple litters of young felines, making the demands of extra care and neonatal attention more challenging. The shelter faces a shortage of homes and foster families to accommodate the peak kitten season.

In an effort to stop the late winter breeding cycle, cat owners are urged to take a proactive approach by spaying their female cats and neutering their male cats.

“People are often surprised to learn that a cat can become pregnant as early as four months of age, so being proactive about spaying and neutering is important,” said Interim Director of Huntsville Animal Services Virgie Graham. “Cats can safely have the simple procedure at about two months old or as soon as they weigh two pounds.”

According to Huntsville Animal Services, allowing a cat to have a litter does not offer any health advantages. Spaying or neutering contributes to a cat's well-being. Neutered males experience reduced rates of testicular cancer, while spayed females are less susceptible to breast cancer and eliminate the risk of pyometra, a potentially fatal uterine infection. Spayed and neutered pets are also less likely to roam or spray urine to mark territory.

The hazards facing outdoor cats extend beyond pregnancy concerns. Venturing outdoors exposes cats to the dangers of vehicular accidents, accidental or deliberate poisoning, attacks from other animals, and the risk of contracting diseases like rabies or feline leukemia.

For those seeking financial assistance with spaying and neutering, the Fixin’ Alabama Spay/Neuter program offers support, with procedures available for as low as $5. Residents of the City of Huntsville who qualify for Medicaid, WIC, Food Stamps, Social Security Disability, or have an annual income below $35,000 are eligible for discounted rates.
