Huntsville leaders comment on County Commission's Confederate memorial decision

Groups in Huntsville and local leaders call for the removal of a Confederate statue from the front of the Madison County Courthouse.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Shortly after the Madison County Commission approved a resolution to remove the Confederate monument in front of the county courthouse in downtown Huntsville, Huntsville mayor Tommy Battle and City Council President Devyn Keith weighed in on the decision.

Mayor Battle said, "The City of Huntsville pledges to work hand in hand with the Madison County Commission to help them find a suitable home for the monument in an appropriate historic context.”

Council President Keith said, "I am proud of the actions taken by the Madison County Commission to begin the process of relocating the statue. I am introducing a resolution in support of this effort at Thursday night’s City Council meeting.”
