HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Air up your tires, strap on your helmet and get ready to hit the road! The Huntsville Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) wants to hear from you!
The MPO is developing a plan to create a safer, ore connected bicycle network and wans your input. The plan will identify future bicycle routes, lanes and trails that connect people to popular destinations within Huntsville, Madison, Madison County, Triana and Owens Cross Roads areas.
"The bike network should be for riders of all skill levels of interest and this is a big part of that, is hearing from as many different folks as we possibly can," says Dennis Madsen, Huntsville Manager of Urban and Long-Range Planning.
It's been almost 20 years since a new bike plan has been implemented in the city of Huntsville, the most recent dating back to 2006. Madsen says, "This is the first step of kind of getting the public and the cyclists and the users who would come out and be most interested in this."
Huntsville has seen a lot of change since 2006. The new bike plan will reflecvt how the city has grown in recent years. Larry Mason, Executive Dirctor of Huntsville Urban Bike Share Coop (HUBS), says, "Congestion is a big issue here in Huntsville. We're growing very fast and everybody's always complaining about how much congestion there is."
"We want to take a step back, especially how much we're going and how quickly we're growing," says Madsen.
The MPO encourages bicyclists to share feedback through an online survey and interactive map available through Aug. 30.
