Huntsville officials forming plan for when the city reopens

"We have a team of people that is looking at how we would reopen," said Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle.

It's been almost a month since the first coronavirus case in Madison County and city leaders are already working on plans for when things can return back to normal.

"If we are going to have much of a surge and we certainly hope the levels here in Madison County continue to level out; then what?" said Dr. Pam Hudson the CEO of Crestwood Medical Center.

Dr. Hudson added that while some models predict a surge in the next week or two, things have really started to level off.

Though no one knows exactly when we can start returning to our everyday lives, our local health officials are already looking at what changes will have to be implemented when that time comes.

"I'm asking you now to began to think about going back to work or life as normal (in the new normal), and that's beginning to think about the habits that you are developing now and how you will continue that in the future." said Dr. Hudson.

"I encourage people to continue to wear masks even after this as we get back to normal," said Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle. "The virus is not just going to go away. As we go back to a less than normal normal we have to make sure we're being safe and secure."

Mayor Battles says the city being reopened for business isn't up to local officials.

"It won't be our call. It will be the Alabama Department of Public Health, it will be the governor's office and Washington may have a part in that."

Right now city leaders are forming plans for when things can return to normal.

"We have a team of people that is  looking at how we would reopen. You can't just "boom" reopen. Can you imagine if we said right now that we were open? Everyone is ready to have a meal that someone else has cooked. Could you imagine the crowd that would be in the waiting area of the restaurant to try to get in? And spreading germs and diseases among themselves." Mayor Battle said.

According to Mayor Battle, when they get the green light to reopen, they plan on opening businesses in waves to avoid having a resurgence.
