City of Huntsville Parks and Rec welcomes back after-school program

The City of Huntsville Parks and Recreation department is bringing back last year's after school program to help families.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. —

August 11, 2022

Huntsville Parks & Recreation produced a Fall Program Guide, filled with activities, events and programs for every interest, age and ability. Dorianne Johnson, Recreation Superintendent of Community Services, encourages residents to learn more about the 100 free programs offered by Parks & Recreation.

“We offer so much more than many people realize,” she said. “This is a great opportunity to try something new!”

There are walking groups and pickleball play, athletic leagues and aquatic instruction, art classes and salsa lessons. From Tai Chi to calligraphy, fall break camps to fall festivals, the guide is the ultimate resource for fun. Best of all, nearly every offering is free!

The City of Huntsville's Parks and Recreation Department is bringing back their after school program for students in 1st through 6th grade who are within the Huntsville school system.

James Gossett is the director of the parks and recreation department and shared what these programs do.

“After school programs in general are designed to help parents who work during the day, obviously. So we set this program up to be an affordable program and with it being in different neighborhoods throughout the city, it also has a little bit more accessibility to everyone,” Gossett said.

The program begins August 8th and will be held Monday through Friday from 2:30 PM to 6:00 P.M. at six different facilities in the area:

  • Brahan Spring Recreation Center
  • Cavalry Hill Community Center
  • Dr. Richard Showers, Sr. Recreation Center
  • Dr. Robert Shurney Legacy Center
  • Fern Bell Recreation Center
  • Mark Russell Recreation Center

There's a snack and homework time, an enrichment period, and a physical activity.

Gossett said that this program is a great resource for guardians now more than ever.

“Obviously in the conditions and the times we’re in with inflation and a lot of cases, parents, guardians, everybody’s working or having a job, children need a place to go that is safe, that is productive, that they get a benefit out of and the parents get a benefit out of being there.”

You can sign up for the program online via their website until August 15th. But, spaces are limited and can fill up quick.

The fee to enroll is $20 a week per student or $10 a week for siblings.

Gossett hopes this program, and the staff, will enrich the lives of students who attend.

“Our staff certainly take a lot of pride in, being able to impact children’s lives in the community so they work very hard and very diligently to put together a program that once the child leaves our facility, they’re better than when they go there, that's the goal.”
