Huntsville Parks & Recreation hosts inaugural HerPower Walk celebrating Women's History Month

Huntsville Parks & Recreation held their first HerPower walk in Big Spring park The free 3 - mile walk is all in honor of Women's History Month.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Huntsville Parks & Recreation held their inaugural HerPower Walk in Big Spring Park celebrating Women's History Month. The center explained that this free 3 -  mile walk offers participants a chance to enjoy the beauty of the park while also celebrating remarkable women who enrich the lives of citizens.

Participants, Gabrielle Rodgers and Allison Farris are long time friends, since kindergarten to be exact, and couldn't let this moment pass them by. "I saw this, I was like, hey, like, we need to do this for our health, because if we don't do something now, like, it's going to get worse," said Rodgers.

Farris also shared that when it comes to health Rodgers is one of her biggest motivators. "She's the one that told me about it, and it was just awesome to have someone that I can do this with this experience. And also, it's just awesome to see all these women to just come together and for one purpose, just to represent us and the community."

Huntsville Superintendent of Recreation for Community Services Dorianne Johnson also shared one unique way this walk aims to empower women during each lap. "As you see women walking around their words that say that you're valuable, you're loved, your spirit, you're driven, your capable, you're valuable, you're resilient. And so, hey, what better way to do that than walk and see those words and be empowered? "

Jennie Robinson with Huntsville City Council, District 3 explained that this is the first HerPower walk, and the goal is that this won't be the last. "We hope that every year more and more women and men of all ages will come and join us for the walk just to celebrate this beautiful resource we have here, at the big spring, celebrate being healthy, and celebrate women who are part of this community."
