HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — This year, many people have taken to the streets for racial and social justice. However, there have been some arrests along the way here in Huntsville.
Here's what you need to know to exercise your right while avoiding conflict. The Huntsville Police Department says if you obtain a permit, it allows you to demonstrate in a designated public area and use amplified sound.
You can still gather without a permit and you're allowed to march on the sidewalk. However, you cannot interfere with a business, like restaurants with seating outdoors, or block a roadway. Police say communication is key.
"I would hope that all of the commanders from our side of the house to the leaders from the gatherings come together with the law enforcement officers and say 'Hey, we plan on being out here. This is why we're out here today. We want to be in this area. Is it okay, you know?' And they'll be glad to tell you," says Huntsville Police Department Public Information Officer, Lt. Jesse Sumlin.
Huntsville police says folks should call them if they see someone armed with a weapon at a demonstration.
