Huntsville Police Department conducting traffic safety checkpoints April 12th-14th

Officers with HPD's DUI Task Force will have checkpoints spread out across the city at traffic crash "hot spots" to deter and stop impaired drivers.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Don't drink and drive. That's the message from Huntsville Police as they conduct traffic safety checkpoints throughout the city this weekend. They're hoping to keep people from driving impaired and catch people who are driving under the influence or breaking other traffic laws.

If you are stopped at a traffic safety checkpoint, be ready to present your driver's license, proof of insurance and vehicle registration to officers.

Any time you think you see an impaired driver, HPD asks you to call their non-emergency line at 256-722-7100. When you call, please provide the location, vehicle and driver description, and the vehicle’s direction of travel. If there is immediate danger to the public, call 911.

Officers could conduct checkpoints at one or more of these designated "traffic crash hotspots", identified by the National Alabama Highway Safety Office (NAHSO):

  • Jordan Lane/Sparkman Drive
  • Mastin Lake Road/Pulaski Pike
  • Meridian St./Delaware Blvd.
  • Moores Mill Road/Stanwood Blvd.
  • Bankhead Parkway/Douglas Lane
  • Cecil Ashburn Drive/Old Big Cove Road
  • Church St./Pratt Ave.
  • Clinton Ave./Monroe St.
  • University Drive/Old Monrovia Road
  • University Drive/Research Park Blvd.
  • University Drive/Slaughter Road

and more.

Huntsville Police Sgt. Antonio Shorter said, "Impaired driving is a choice. All right? It's a choice. But that choice comes with major consequences that could be potentially harming yourself. Right. Fatally harming someone else. Fatally harming yourself as well. And or jail you know, jail is like I guess you can say, just the first line of consequence. But ultimately, you take the life of someone else. You take the life of yourself…"
