HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Huntsville Police Department (HPD) has received its ninth advanced reaccreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). To get advanced accreditation, an agency must demonstrate continued compliance with 460 law enforcement standards. The CALEA Board of Commissioners routinely reviews these standards to enhance accountability within the agency and the community.
“We know Huntsville has one of the best public safety agencies in the country, and this reaccreditation affirms that,” Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle said. “It’s also a testament to HPD’s sworn officers and civilians who serve our citizens daily, and we thank them for their service and sacrifice.”
Huntsville Police Department first received accreditation from CALEA in 1996 and has since earned reaccreditation every four years as required by the agency. CALEA assessors are granted access to HPD’s policies, procedures, records, and personnel as part of the accreditation process.
The accreditation process also includes interviews with HPD employees and citizens. HPD Chief Kirk Giles recognized Jessica Coleman and Deborah Riggs for their efforts as part of the Accreditation Team.
“This advanced reaccreditation reflects the department’s commitment to professional law enforcement for our community,” Chief Giles said. “I thank the employees who helped us achieve this goal and the citizens for their continued support.”
