Huntsville Police ramp up school zone safety ahead of new school year

HPD wants to remind drivers that they should be cautious near intersections and crosswalks, especially since some students walk or bike to school.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — With the new school year starting next month, the Huntsville Police Department is reminding drivers about its strict rules for speeding in school zones. According to HPD, officers and safety patrol aides will be closely monitoring school zones throughout the year to ensure drivers are following speed limits. They will also enforce other safety rules to protect students.

HPD wants to remind drivers to be cautious near intersections and crosswalks, especially since some students walk or bike to school. Police are also advising parents to remind their children to stay on sidewalks and use designated crosswalks.

It's important for drivers to stop for school buses when their stop signs are out, whether on public roads, private streets, school grounds, or parking lots. Violations can lead to fines, license suspension, or community service.

For those traveling through school zones, HPD suggests finding alternative routes to avoid traffic. Specifically, people heading to Redstone Arsenal via Interstate 565 eastbound should use Jordan Lane (Exit 17A) to beat the Morris Elementary traffic, where there are no school zones.

As a reminder, using handheld devices while driving is now a primary offense under a new ordinance. Huntsville Police officers can pull over drivers who are violating this rule and issue citations.

If you see concerning driving behavior, you can contact Huntsville Police at 256-722-7100. HPD reminds people to be ready to provide details such as the location, vehicle details, and direction of travel to help the police respond.
