The city received an overall score of 6.8, supported by its high Value Index score of 8.1, reflecting its low housing costs. Huntsville also scored 6.6 on the Quality of Life Index, which considers factors such as crime rates, education quality, and resident well-being.
Fort Wayne, Indiana, tops the list as the most affordable city with an overall score of 6.6. The top ten also includes Wichita, Kansas, Springfield, Missouri, Davenport, Iowa, and Montgomery, Alabama.
U.S. News & World Report evaluated cities based on:
- Quality of Life (32%): Includes crime rates, education quality, well-being, commute times, health care, and air quality.
- Value Index (27%): Assesses affordability by comparing median income to housing costs.
- Desirability (19%): Based on survey data and migration trends.
