HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — June 14 will mark the official 248th birthday of the United States Army. Redstone Arsenal got the festivities to a good, early start Saturday with a bash that was open to military personnel, veterans, and civilians alike.
For those still serving, like 1st Lt. Nigel Coles, the Army's birthday is an important family affair. "All my family have served," he said, "my mother and father on both sides of the family. I really appreciate everyone that does take part to celebrate and remember the day."
Coles helps carry on the tradition of service by acting as an Army recruiter.
"I feel like everybody should join the army. It's a great opportunity for yourself to be a part of a team," he said. "Most of us have been a part of a team -football, basketball, hockey, cricket, whatever you want - it's a great thing to be a part of something that's larger than yourself and to push something forward."
Marine Corps and Army veteran A.J. Myslak has fond memories of his time in the service: "[It's a reminder of the] comradeship with your brothers and sisters. I like to show my support."
Myslak said serving was an honor for which he requires no special recognition.
"It is what it was. It was my honor to serve. Nobody asked me to do it. Nobody forced me to do it. I wanted to do it."
FOX54 News was present at Saturday's celebration, continuing our commitment to meet members of the communities our station serves.
