Huntsville residents see recycling pickup delays

One part of town has been waiting for weeks for their recycling to be picked up.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — As we inch closer toward the peak of holiday season, many families will have lots of recycling to do of cardboard boxes and gift-wrapping paper, but some Huntsville residents still have their recycling bins filled.

Huntsville Resident Margaret Harmon's recycling bin sat untouched for more than two weeks and counting. But it's not just hers. Her neighbors are also still waiting for their blue bins to be emptied. Harmon said, "It's just kind of frustrating having to see it out there."

The Huntsville Waste Disposal Authority manages the Recycling Alliance of North Alabama. They have shared the following statement with FOX54News:

"The RANA curbside collection contractor, Platform Waste Solutions, has experienced delays in pickups over the past couple of weeks due to staff being out on leave, and that has affected the timeliness of collections. We are working closely with the team at Platform and should be caught up on collections by Saturday evening. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused, and we are doing our best to pick up as quickly as possible. If residents could please leave their carts on the curb, we will be to them soon.

Platform has also been sending courtesy emails for each route day that has not been completed. If you are not receiving this email, or if you are receiving information for an old address, you may update your information or email address by emailing support@recycling-alliance.com.

Customers can also visit recycling-alliance.com, for the most recent route status. If a customer is missed, please let us know within 3 business days and a crew member will return as soon as possible."

"I understand stuff is going to happen and kids are going to get sick and parents have to stay home with their kids, but they've still got to pick up the recycling," said Harmon.

The recycling bins remain full, but in the meantime, "In order to make the recycling items fit, we've been just burning the cardboard in our fire pit," said Harmon.

The delays aren't new for Margaret and her family. She said the issue popped up last year around this time, as well. She's preparing for a similar situation.
