Rodney Smith, Jr. of Raising Men & Women Lawn Care, Inc. named a 'Benevolent Beard' finalist

Rodney Smith Jr. , founder of Raising Men & Women Lawn Care, Inc, could be rewarded for years of charitable work.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A man who has spent years spreading goodwill and encouraging others to give of themselves is one of five finalists in a contest to identify the country's "Most Benevolent Beard."

Rodney Smith Jr. could receive $20,000 for himself and up to $5,000 more for his charity, "Raising Men & Women Lawn Care, Inc." One day, I came across an elderly man outside moving his lawn and it looked like he was struggling," said Smith, "I'd done what anyone would do. I pulled over and help them out. But, little did I know that one small act of kindness would eventually change my life forever."

The free lawn mowing company is available to the elderly, disabled, single parents and veterans. "I believe it's my life's work and I believe it's my purpose," said Smith, "If you've ever see a horse in a race, they have these blinders on their eyes just to keep them straight and focused. I believe that's what God is doing for me. So, while I know we're making a difference, I just do my best to keep focused and keep on the mission."

Over the years, the organization has encouraged teens to complete a "50 Yard Challenge" -- mowing 50 lawns for free. Those who complete the challenge are rewarded with a new lawn mower and other equipment. "When they can come mow someone's lawn for free, just getting a nice thank you makes them feel good knowing that they're making a difference, helping their person," said Smith."

Smith is one of five people in the running for the "benevolent beard" title. The contest is sponsored by Wahl Home Products. It was open to "whiskered men from across America" who were invited to submit videos describing their charitable work.

Smith is a finalist alongside entrants from Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Bradenton, Fla. The public is asked to consider each contestant's not-for-profit work and vote for their favorite.

This isn't his first brush with fame. In 2020, he was featured on a Lay's Potato Chip bag to benefit Operation Smile. Early in his career, he gained national recognition delivering food to locals in need and for his journey to mow lawns in all 50 states, was honored as a Hardee's All-Star, and raised $10,000 for Texas hurricane victims.

Voting is open through Sept. 9.

The winner will be crowned the "Wahl Man of the Year" and will receive $20,000 for himself and up to $5,000 more for his charity.
