Investigators: Man impersonated officer to harass victim

Limestone County officials say Robert Bowman assumed the identity of an actual investigator in an attempt to make contact with the victim.

ELKMONT, Ala. — Limestone County officials say a man assumed the identity of one of their own investigators in order to harass a person. Robert Shaun Bowman, 45, was arrested Tuesday at his home in Elkmont following a brief standoff, according to a release from the Limestone County Sheriff's Office.

The previous day, while investigating a domestic violence complaint, deputies say they discovered that Bowman had been impersonating Limestone County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Jesse Gibson in order to harass the victim.

Using Gibson's name, deputies say Bowman reached out to people other than the victim and ordered those people to have the victim contact him.

Bowman has been charged with Impersonating a Peace Officer and later released on $2,500 bond. This investigation is ongoing, officials said, and more charges are likely.

This is the second recent incident of North Alabamians arrested on charges of impersonating officers of the peace in Limestone County. On June 2, 18-year-old Logan Martin of Harvest admitted to making several "traffic stops" in an unmarked vehicle claiming to be an officer. Found inside his vehicle was equipment reported missing from area public safety agencies and equipment like high-visibility vests and a shirt with the word 'POLICE' printed on it.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when you are pulled over by an unmarked vehicle.

A viral message claims that dialing '112' can help you determine if an unmarked car belongs to a law enforcement agency. Our national VERIFY team determined that is false for Americans because it is meant for European residents.
