Juneteenth holiday closings

Here's a list of local, state, and federal closings on Monday, June 20, 2022 in honor of the Juneteenth Holiday.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The day is set aside to commemorate the emancipation of slavery in the United States. Originating in Galveston, Texas, the holiday has been celebrated every June 19, in various parts of the United States since 1865. 

Earlier this month, Governor Kay Ivey authorized Monday, June 20, as a holiday for those employed by the state of Alabama for the second year in a row. Since Juneteenth falls on a Sunday this year, the holiday will be recognized the following Monday. 

Monday, June 20, 2022 closures

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Driver License Offices across the state will be closed.

All Post Office locations will also be closed.

City of Huntsville

All municipal offices will close Monday, including Animal Services, Public Transit (Orbit and Access) and Municipal Court. Offices will reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday, June 21.

  • Garbage Collection: Residential collection will be delayed one day the week of June 20-24. Residents should leave carts at the curb until they are collected.
  • Parks & Recreation: All facilities will close except splash pads, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Bicentennial Park Splash Pad is currently shut down.
  • Public Safety: Essential police and fire personnel will remain on duty throughout the holiday.

Decatur

The administrative offices for the City of Decatur will be closed on Monday, June 20, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.

There will be no changes to recycling or garbage collection. The Municipal Landfill will maintain normal operating hours for Monday, June 20.

Florence

Florence municipal offices will also be closed in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.

Garbage & Recycle Routes Will Remain On Schedule With No Changes.

Jackson County

The Jackson County courthouse will be closed on June 20th, 2022 in observance of Juneteenth.
