FLORENCE, Ala. — The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Deputy David Terry was one of the victims who died in a two-car crash that happened around 4 p.m. on Tuesday. The Florence Police Department has now confirmed that Dawn Buchanan, 57, of Florence, was the other driver killed in the crash at the intersection of Florence Boulevard and Sweetwater Avenue.
According to preliminary investigation findings from Florence police, Buchanan was traveling east on Florence Boulevard when a car coming off Sweetwater Avenue failed to yield the right of way. Police report Buchanan swerved, losing control of her vehicle. Buchanan’s car crossed over the median into the westbound lanes of Florence Boulevard, colliding with Terry’s vehicle. Terry and Buchanan were pronounced dead at the scene by Lauderdale Coroner Kim Jones.
Sheriff Joe Hamilton of Lauderdale County made a statement on social media to announce the passing of Deputy David Terry. Hamilton stated that Terry succumbed to injuries suffered in an off-duty car accident. With 26 years of service, Terry had recently served as Director of Corrections. According to Hamilton, Terry had submitted his retirement paperwork and was set to retire in July. He leaves behind a loving wife and three children.
