HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Days after a judge ordered his transfer from a state mental health center, Kyle Lewter is back in jail in Huntsville.
Records show Lewter, 36, was booked back into the detention center Monday afternoon. He is expected back in court on Thursday for a status hearing.
Lewter is charged with the sexual torture and murder of another man --54-year-old Derek Walls -- whose body was found in Harvest earlier this year.
Until Monday, Lewter had been at the Taylor Hardin Secure Medical Facility undergoing psychiatric care and evaluation. According to court documents, he was found by the Alabama Department of Mental Health to be "psychiatrically stable" to participate in court proceedings.
He is being held without bond.
Lewter was elected chair of the Madison County chapter of the Young Republicans in 2022. He no longer holds that position.
