LifeSouth urges blood donations as Tropical Storm Helene approaches

LifeSouth Community Blood Centers is encouraging residents in the Southeast to donate blood as Tropical Storm Helene approaches.
LifeSouth Community Blood Centers is urging the community to roll up their sleeves this Summer.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — As Tropical Storm Helene approaches the southeastern United States, with the potential to strengthen into a hurricane, LifeSouth Community Blood Centers is calling for blood donors to give before the storm arrives.

Officials warn that the timing could not be worse, as blood supplies are already low, and the storm is expected to disrupt critical blood drives across Florida, Georgia, and parts of Alabama over the coming week.

The anticipated fallout from the storm, including flooding, road closures, and power outages, could halt blood drives for days, leading to low blood supplies.

LifeSouth serves several medical facilities, including Huntsville Hospital, Decatur General, North Alabama Medical Center, and many others across the region. LifeSouth reports that all blood types are needed.

To encourage donations, LifeSouth offers a $20 e-gift card to all blood donors. Those donating platelets or double red cells will receive a $40 e-gift card. Additionally, every donor will receive a special pin honoring Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and a wellness screening prior to donation.

To find a blood drive near you or to learn more about the donation process, call LifeSouth’s toll-free number at 1-888-795-2707 or visit here.
