Athens police officers say a 15-year-old is in the hospital after being shot by an officer. Investigators say the teen pointed a rifle at officers during a disturbance call Saturday afternoon.
The incident happened around 2:15 p.m., when officers said they responded to call about a juvenile "acting out of control" at an Elles Drive home and threatening family members with weapons.
Arriving officers found the 15-year-old armed with knives and guns. Police Chief Anthony Pressnell says the teen went into different rooms of the house, throwing knives at approaching officers.
Pressenell said the teen then pointed a rifle at officers, and an officer fired their weapon. The teen was struck by a single round of ammunition.
Officers at the scene performed first aid until Athens Fire and EMS arrived, Pressnell said. The teen was then taken to an area hospital. Their condition is not known at this time.
