Boeing confirms layoffs at Huntsville facility; filing shows 128 jobs affected

A statement from the aerospace company says "programs are affected by decisions external to Boeing."

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A WARN notice filed April 30 shows The Boeing Company is planning to lay off 128 workers at its Huntsville, Alabama Defense, Space & Security facility starting June 28.

WARN Act notices, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, are designed to make sure companies give advanced notice in situations of mass layoffs.

FOX54 reached out to company representatives who confirmed the planned layoffs, but did not confirm the number of jobs affected. “We have notified some team members in Huntsville of a potential layoff, as programs are affected by decisions external to Boeing," they said in a statement. "We will continue to be transparent with team members and explore alternative placement opportunities within Boeing for impacted employees.”

The Space Launch System (SLS) is one of the programs affected by the potential layoffs, although other programs and functions could also be affected.

The Alabama Boeing campus employs more than 3,000 people and has been pivotal in the development of U.S. missile and weapons systems as well as space system programs. It has had a presence in North Alabama for more than six decades.

Boeing Defense, Space & Security is one of three branches of the company, the others being Boeing Global Services and Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
