HARVEST, Ala. — Churches around the world gave back on Saturday to celebrate 'Serve Day 2020', and one local church in Harvest took part.

Refuge Church partnered with Madison County Schools, Publix, and other organizations to feed families in need. Volunteers say they gave away about 20,000 pounds of food at Sparkman Middle School. The church also partnered with Athens City Schools where they say volunteers gave away about 20,000 pounds of food there too.

Church leaders say bags and boxes included pasta, produce, and soup. The food is donated from One Generation Away, a non-profit organization based in Franklin, Tennessee - just outside of Nashville.

"One of the best ways to love people and meet them where they're at is to feed them, and that's what we want to do. It's a basic need - the instruction of Jesus to take care of people that are hungry. Feed the hungry," says Associate Pastor, Mark Branon.

Branon says the church is planning another food giveaway this fall, either in September or October. He says this giveaway is normally done three times a year.
