Athens City Schools dance team to perform at Disney Springs

The Athens City Schools Dance Team was formed in 2017

ATHENS, Ala. — It's a wish upon a star for the Athens City Schools Dance Team. "I'm super excited that we get to have this opportunity," said team captain Morgan Murphree. "This is one of those once in a lifetime opportunities," said team coach Kristie Murphree.

Not everyone gets a chance to dance at Walt Disney World, let alone, have a one-on-one lesson from an actual performer. "I do competitive dance, so I learn from instructors all the time, but never like at the level like Disney, so this is something so new for even me," said Morgan Murphree.

32 Athens High School and Middle School students will be making the trip to Orlando to perform on the Disney Springs Waterfront Stage. Some couldn't believe this would be the result of digging a little deeper. "I never thought of it in all my years. I never thought we'd get this far. But, I know we had the ability to do it, but I never thought we would," said team co-captain Serenity Lamayia Mangram.

Lots of preparation is happening to make this performance one the crowd will never forget. The team is even holding outdoor practices to get used to the Florida sun.

"It's a 22-minute performance," said Kristie Murphree, "Everything has to be Disney music. We had to completely come up with everything that was a Disney-run show."

Some dancers are excited to do this trip together as a team. "I'm excited to learn from Disney Choreographers," said Morgan Murphree. Mangram said, "It's a good bonding thing we can do and all get to know each other more and experience something new we have never experienced before."

The team said the knowledge they'll take from this will not just allow them to fly, but also to soar. "The knowledge that they're going to take back from this. I mean,  just how to perform on a stage when it's not just your parents," said Kristie Murphree.

Kristie Murphree tells FOX54 it was extremely difficult to pick from the over 2,000 Disney songs to compile the playlist for the team's performance.
