Decatur resident allegedly attacked elderly neighbor with hammer, police say

DECATUR, Ala. — A Decatur resident faces an assault charge after police say she attacked an elderly woman on the street in the northeast side of town early Saturday morning.

Police said the incident happened in the area of Line Street and Market Street about 7:15 a.m. A witness reported seeing one woman attack an older woman with a hammer before leaving the scene in a vehicle.

The witness then reportedly followed the vehicle and reported the description to police.

Police stopped the vehicle and ultimately arrested the driver, 32-year-old Mary Hughes. She was booked into the Morgan County Jail on $50,000 bond for a charge listed on the county jail website as second-degree assault.

The elderly female victim was located and taken to Huntsville Hospital for treatment of her injuries. Her condition was not immediately known.
