MADISON, Ala — First responders say the driver of a garbage truck was taken to the hospital Friday after his truck left the road and plowed directly into a Madison home.
Police say it happened around 11 a.m., when a fire inspector noticed the Republic Services truck sideswiping curbs along Sullivan Street. The truck reportedly narrowly avoided hitting one house before it crashed directly into the front of a home on Grayson Avenue.
At least two other vehicles on the property were seen to have sustained damage. No other occupied vehicles were hit. The truck left a gaping hole through the front wall of the home and destroyed a portion of the roof.
The driver was pulled from the truck by first responders and taken to Huntsville Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Madison County Fire Chief David Bailey said the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Officials said there were no humans inside the home at the time of the crash, but four dogs on the property have been temporarily rehoused while work continues to determine if the home is salvageable.
"There's going to have to be stabilization to the house," said Bailey. "We may be helping with that or a private company may be helping with that, and then they'll move forward."
The homeowners have been notified about the incident and are en route to claim their animals and begin the rebuilding process.
