DECATUR, Ala. — It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of retired Decatur Police Chief Ed Taylor.
Chief Taylor began his career with the Decatur Police Department in December 1974. Over the years, Taylor rose through the ranks and served in numerous capacities throughout his career including patrol, CID and the training division. He graduated from the 196th Session of the F.B.I Academy in 1996. In August 2007 he was one of two appointed to a Major position.
Taylor was sworn in as Chief of Police in July 2011. He held this rank until retiring in 2016 after 41 years in law enforcement.
Chief Taylor was instrumental in starting the DPD’s Special Response Team and was at the forefront of advocating for the Special Olympics and the Law Enforcement Torch Run. Chief Taylor was selected as part of the 24-member US delegation of officers running the torch for the Australian World Games and was also inducted into the Alabama Torch Run Hall of Fame.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
