HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Huntsville Hospital says it is taking significant steps to address the health care demands of North Alabama and southern Tennessee with a major expansion project that will add 154,000 square feet of new clinical space.

The Alabama Certificate of Need Review Board recently approved the construction of a five-story addition to the hospital's Madison Street Tower.

This $150 million project is a direct response to the region’s rapid growth, both in population and health care needs. Jeff Samz, President and CEO of Huntsville Hospital Health System, expressed excitement over the expansion’s approval.

“Expanding the Madison Street Tower will give us the space to meet the advanced health care needs of our community for decades to come,” Samz said.

The expansion will focus on the northeast corner of the hospital, near Madison Street and St. Clair Avenue, and is expected to take about two years to complete. The addition will bring several key upgrades, including:

  • A state-of-the-art Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (ICU), funded by a generous $10 million donation, the largest private gift in the hospital's history.
  • A new Neuro Intensive Care Unit (Neuro ICU) dedicated to neurosurgical and stroke patients.
  • Three additional floors of acute medical space.
  • 120 new private patient rooms, marking a significant shift away from double-occupancy rooms.
  • A redesigned Emergency Department vehicle entrance to improve patient flow.

Samz said that the additional space will help reduce wait times in the Emergency Department and eliminate double-occupancy rooms, a change that will improve patient comfort and care.

“No one wants to share a hospital room, and we'll finally be able to end this practice," Samz said.

The hospital is partnering with Robins & Morton, the same company that built the original Madison Street Tower in 2006, to manage the construction of this major expansion.
