Negligent homicide charge for houseguest who left gun in reach of 4-year-old

Nickarious McConnico is charged with criminally negligent homicide in the death of a child at a Huntsville apartment on April 28.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Police say a houseguest staying at an apartment over the weekend left a gun on a coffee table where it could be reached by a child. That child accidentally shot and killed themselves. Nickarious D'Shun McConnico was arrested and charged with criminally negligent homicide in the child's death.

Huntsville Police were called to a shooting at an apartment at the Highland Pointe Apartments located at 196 Jeff Road NW on the morning of April 28. Madison County Coroner Tyler Berryhill reported a child was killed by a gunshot wound at that location.

Police officials say further investigation revealed that McConnico, an overnight guest, left a loaded gun on a coffee table before going to sleep. Police say evidence shows the 4-year-old ultimately was able to pick up the gun and fire it.
