ELKMONT, Ala. — A Hartselle man is dead following an attempted home invasion, according to Limestone County Sheriff's Office investigators. The incident happened around 4:20 a.m. Saturday at a home in the 17000 block of Morris Road in Elkmont.

According to an incident statement distributed by the sheriff's office, the homeowner called authorities reporting they had been awakened by someone "violently attempting to gain entry." The homeowner had armed himself and was awaiting deputies to arrive when the intruder reportedly kicked in the front door.

The homeowner fired their weapon, hitting the intruder. The intruder "retreated outside, where he succumbed to his injuries," the incident statement continued.

Investigators say the intruder was identified as 44-year-old Christopher Jason Hovis. They said the investigation remains ongoing, however preliminary results indicate the incident was a justified shooting.
