National Drug Take Back Day 2024: Where to dispose of medications in North Alabama

Madison County will have three special drop-off locations open on April 27. There are also year-round drop boxes across the Tennessee Valley.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Saturday, April 27, is National Drug Take Back Day. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration partners with state and local agencies to collect unwanted, unused, and expired prescription medications. This is to prevent accidental and deliberate drug overdoses, as well as to keep the chemicals in these drugs from getting into public water systems through household wastewater.

Madison County Sheriff's Office has coordinated three special drop-off locations that will accept your unwanted medications April 27 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.:

  • Huntsville Public Safety Complex (815 Wheeler Avenue)
  • Madison City Hall (100 Hughes Road)
  • CVS Meridianville (12275 U.S. 231)

The Marshall County Sheriff's Office will host a drop-off Saturday from 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at their facility at 423 Blount Ave.

Jackson County Courthouse will hold a drop-off Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In Lincoln County, Tenn., the Fayetteville Police Department will host a drop-off at Lincoln County High School from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

If you can't make it to Saturday's special drop-off events, there are drop-boxes specially designed for taking your unused and unwanted prescription pills. Here is a list of the most recent locations published by the Alabama A&M and Auburn University Extension:

Lauderdale County

  • University of North Alabama - Guillot University Center

Lawrence County

  • Lawrence County Sheriff's Office (242 Parker Road, Moulton)
  • Town Creek Police Department (15935 Main Street)

Limestone County

  • Limestone County Sheriff's Department (101 W. Elm Street, Athens)

Madison County

  • Alabama A&M University - University Services Building (4900 Meridian Street N)
  • Huntsville Police Department - North Precinct (4014 N Memorial Parkway)
  • Huntsville Police Department - South Precinct (7900 Bailey Cove Road SE)

Alabama Public Health says more than 6 million Americans abuse prescription drugs. ADPH created the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program to help detect the diversion, abuse, and misuse of prescription drugs.
