Oakwood University hosts fundraiser for family of sophomore Jeavonn Barracks

Jeavonn Barracks, 20, suffered an 'incident' at the university natatorium, the school said in a statement.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Oakwood University is reaching out to support the family of sophomore Jeavonn Barracks,who tragically passed away last week after a swimming incident. The school is hosting a fundraiser to help the family with unexpected expenses for his final arrangements.

The following is a letter sent to Oakwood University students and faculty on Friday:

Dear Oakwood Family,

Over the past seven days, the Oakwood University community has been praying relentlessly for one of our bright lights, who was hospitalized last Thursday, February 15, after an unfortunate swimming incident at the Oakwood University Natatorium.

Today, it is with deep sadness and heartfelt sympathy that we announce the death of Jeavonn Barracks, a sophomore here at Oakwood University. Jeavonn was 20 years old. We extend our deepest sympathies to Jeavonn's family, friends, and classmates, and we ask you to keep them in your prayers during this difficult time.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy. Let us be reminded of the promise that "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" - Psalm 34:18.

Several resources have been mobilized to help and support our campus and community cope with this time of grief. OU Health and Counseling Services are providing counseling services to those in need. Additionally, the Office of Spiritual Life and Mission is providing prayer and spiritual support to all those who need it.

On Friday at 6 PM, there will be a prayer vigil at the Eternal Flame located between the Blake Center and the Eva B. Dykes Library. At 8 PM during AYM, condolence cards will be available for signing in the Oakwood University Church lobby. These cards will be sent to Jeavonn's family to show our love and support. Counselors and local pastors will also be present to provide support for our student body, faculty, and staff during this time of grief.
