Huntsville's old city hall building to be redeveloped as expansion to Big Spring Park

Huntsville city leaders approved a design contract with an architectural firm who will be tasked with converting the space once the administration building is razed.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The site of the soon-to-be former Huntsville City Hall and administration offices will be reclaimed into green space. City leaders announced Thursday that a design contract has been awarded to an architectural firm who will be tasked with converting the site into recreational land for an expansion to Big Spring Park.

The current Administration Building on Fountain Circle will be demolished following the transition to the new City Hall, which overlooks the downtown square and is expected to open later this year, and the site of the former building will be added to the park.

The City approved a contract with Bostick Landscape Architects to come up with the design of the new space. Mayor Tommy Battle said the contract really starts getting the plan in motion.

"As our downtown thrives, so does the need for recreational spaces,” Mayor Battle said. “This property presents an opportunity to expand Big Spring Park, solidifying its position as a cherished City landmark. By enlarging the footprint, we provide an even larger public space for everyone to enjoy."

When the initial design phase is completed in September, city leaders said, residents should expect to see plans for two to three terrace plaza levels, a pavilion, new sidewalk/hardscape connections to Church Street, new landscaping and irrigation, additional lighting and electrical infrastructure.

The city said it expects to retain a large portion of the greenspace that exists on the sloped area next to the Administration Building.
