HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam that's being reported in the area. Scammers are pretending to be sheriff’s office employees, using fake names and phone numbers to trick people into paying them money.
According to the MCSO, the caller will claim there’s a legal issue, such as a fine or an arrest warrant, and tell people they need to pay immediately. They might ask for payment through Bitcoin or gift cards.
The scammers use a technique called "spoofing," which makes it look like the call is coming from a legitimate phone number. This can make the call seem real.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office wants everyone to know that they will never ask for payment or personal information over the phone. If you receive a call like this, do not provide any information or make any payments. Hang up and contact them directly to verify the call.
