MADISON, Ala. — The City of Madison will hold a Drug Take-Back event on Saturday, October 26, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Madison City Hall, located at 100 Hughes Road.

The event will take place in the front parking lot and will operate as a drive-thru for convenience.

Residents are encouraged to turn in unused or expired medications for safe disposal. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and its partners will accept tablets, capsules, patches, and other forms of prescription drugs.

However, syringes, sharp objects, and illicit drugs will not be accepted. Liquid medications, such as cough syrup, should remain tightly sealed in their original containers. Additionally, vaping devices and cartridges will be accepted, provided that lithium batteries are removed.

This event is part of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing the amount of unused medications in communities. Over the past decade, the DEA has collected more than 17.9 million pounds of unneeded medications.

Last year alone, nearly 600,000 pounds of expired and unneeded prescription drugs were collected from 4,675 sites across the country.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), properly disposing of unnecessary medications can help prevent misuse, accidental ingestion, and taking medications for nonmedical purposes.
