MADISON, Ala. — As the holiday season approaches, the City of Madison and Madison Fire and Rescue are reminding residents to take extra precautions to ensure safety in the home.

In addition to ensuring your home has working smoke detectors, Madison Fire and Rescue encourages residents to test their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors regularly and replace the batteries when necessary.

Holiday Cooking Safety Tips
When preparing meals for family and friends, remember these safety tips:

  • Never disable a smoke alarm while cooking.
  • Switch off appliances when not in use and double-check that they are not left running.
  • Monitor children around hot food and liquids, which can cause burns.
  • Keep flammable items away from the stovetop to prevent accidental fires.
  • Never cook while sleepy, under the influence of alcohol, or on medications that cause drowsiness.

Did you know that the Madison Fire Department offers smoke detectors and installation for city residents? To apply for a free smoke detector, visit the City of Madison Fire Department website or call the department for more information.
