Madison's 'safe haven' baby box ready for use: first in Alabama

A baby drop-off box is now ready to use at Madison Fire and Rescue Station 1.

MADISON, Alabama — Kids to Love is celebrating a very special moment that impacts the entire state of Alabama with the first ever Safe Haven Baby Box in the state. The baby box is located at Madison Fire and Rescue Station 1. First responders, as well as Kids to Love organizers, agree that the baby box is all about saving precious lives.

Kids to Love Founder and CEO Lee Marshall said in 2003, a record 17 babies were surrendered through the Safe Haven Baby Boxes.  "Kids to Love saw the need for Safe Haven Baby Boxes early this time last year, and we championed the effort to get this bill through the legislature."

Madison Mayor Paul Finley believes the best thing to do in a community is give options for improved quality of life. "Whether you're the first or second, the 10th or the 50th, when you can add value to your community in options for them, you're making a positive impact, and that's what we want to continue to do."

Safe Haven Baby Boxes was formed by Monica Kelsey in 2016 as she learned in adulthood that she was abandoned as an infant. "That child was me. So I stand on the frontlines of this movement as one of these kids that wasn't lovingly and safely and legally and anonymously placed in a safe haven baby box. But this is my legacy and I am their voice."
