HUNTSVILLE, Alabama — Several groups around North Alabama are holding celebrations in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 18.
Some of the events taking place in North Alabama on Monday include the following:
- 16th Annual Athens-Limestone Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Program
- The program will be held virtually in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic at 10 a.m.
- Winners of the essay and art contests will read and discuss their works during the program.
- All African People's Development & Empowerment Project Fifth Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
- This annual day of service will take place at Zenzele Consignment store, located at 2205-F University Ave. in Huntsville from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
- COVID-19 protocols will be observed.
- There will be cultural performances, lunch, community outreach and shopping at the event.
- Delta Theta Lambda's 36th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Breakfast
- The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.'s Delta Theta Lambda Foundation will hold its annual MLK Unity Breakfast virtually on Monday at 8 a.m.
- Decatur Morgan County Minority Development Association's 28th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Awards and Unity Breakfast
- The scholarship awards and unity breakfast will be held virtually this year with the pre-show beginning at 7:30 a.m. and event beginning at 8 a.m.
- The event will have musical performances by Black Women in Jazz Awards Best Jazz Artist Winner Toni Redd, Luther Vandross Tribute Artist Danny Clay and more.
- More than $40,000 in scholarships will be awarded through public donations and private corporate partnerships.
- University of North Alabama Martin Luther King Jr. Remembrance March
- The march will begin at the University of North Alabama campus at 11 a.m. on Monday. Participants are asked to gather on the front entrance steps of the Wendell W. Gunn Commons.
- The march will take place through the campus ending at the Guillot University Center Atrium where boxed lunches, information about the school's Black Studies program, live music and information about how to honor Dr. King will be provided.
