Nine North Alabama organizations are among dozens of literacy programs receiving grants this season from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. The grants awarded to Alabama organizations are expected to positively impact the lives of more than 13,000 individuals.
Local organizations impacted include:
- Athens - Learn to Read Council & Limestone County, Inc. ($10,000)
- Grant - Grant Public Library ($2,000)
- Huntsville - Boys & Girls Clubs of North Alabama ($2,000)
- Huntsville - Global Ties Alabama ($6,500)
- Huntsville - Madison County School System ($3,000)
- Huntsville - Village of Promise, Inc. ($3,000)
- Muscle Shoals - Northwest Shoals Community College (two grants totaling $18,000)
- Rogersville - Rogersville Public Library ($2,000)
- Tuscumbia - Helen Keller Public Library ($2,000)
The funds are part of the Foundation’s $240,000 support of programs across the state of Alabama, and more than $10.6 million donated to support adult, family and summer literacy programs in the 48 states in which Dollar General operates. With the announced grants, the DGLF also surpasses helping more than 20 million individuals achieve their educational dreams since its inception in 1993.

We hope these funds provide resources needed to positively change students’ lives, helping them to build a brighter future for themselves and generations to come.”
Funding can be used to purchase new technology, books, materials, or software to enhance literacy programs.
