MORGAN COUNTY, Ala. — Some folks knew. Others were uncertain.
A series of techno-towers popping up in and around Decatur has prompted online discussion in recent days, with theories on their purpose ranging from Automated License Plate Readers to radiometers.
Local officials confirmed to FOX54 that the towers are part of a growing 5G network -- another popular guess among area residents.
Extenders are placed in communities to amplify and retransmit 5G signals, enhancing the reach of the network.
The range can vary, as can the appearance of the devices.
Communications companies have been building out 5G systems over the past five years. The technology was implemented for general commercial use in 2019.
