HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Calhoun Community College is ready to let its new Warhawk fly - but not without first naming its new mascot. The college system posted this week on social media that they are asking its student body to submit names for the anthropomorphic Warhawk character.
Calhoun students can fill out an online form with their ideas for appropriate names. No deadline was announced and there were no details about how the name will ultimately be decided.
In addition, Calhoun officials are seeking two students to become the Warhawk and wear the mascot costume at games and various events as required. A separate form has been created for students expressing interest.
Per the questionnaire, the school is seeking students from any Calhoun campus, including the Alabama Center for the Arts, who are in good academic standing and who have reliable transportation. The successful applicant will be a high-energy, enthusiastic and creative performer. Prior mascot experience would be handy, but is not required. There is also a space for applicants to explain why they would be the best choice to act as mascot.
No deadline for the mascot application was announced.
Calhoun Community College was named after John C. Calhoun, our country's 7th Vice President. He was considered a War Hawk in the War of 1812, hence the name of the school's mascot.
The new character prepares to make its debut as the school prepares for the upcoming year in athletics; men's basketball tryouts are set for Saturday, April 15 from 10 a.m. to noon.
