New elementary school in the works in Madison

A new school is in the works for Madison City Schools. It's expected to house 1,000 students.

MADISON, Ala. — Growth in the city of Madison is on the rise, and Madison City Schools is making room to house more students. The district announced that a new elementary school is expected to take in 1,000 students. FOX54 spoke with the school district's superintendent who explained all the details.

Madison City Schools superintendent Ed Nichols said this will be the thirteenth Madison City School. "We're very excited. The board approved a contract with Pearce Construction to build our new elementary school on the west side of town. We're currently almost at 13,000 students and that's we average about 300 new students every year. We have a projection by the year 2030 to be somewhere around 14,500 to 15,000 students."

Nichols continued that they are still brainstorming as to what the name of the new school will be. "It's off of Hardiman Road, just past Burgreen and in Madison Branch. A new subdivision over there, Madison Branch. We haven't named the school yet. We're going to do like we did for Journey. We'll send out a survey to parents and students and ask for suggestions for the naming of the school we we call it right now Russell Branch, just for construction purposes."

When the school opens in the Fall of 2026, Nichols adds that this is one key thing to note. "It will rezone every elementary school in the district. We've got growth in Town Madison, that's new and its come online. We've got growth in Triana, which is part of our school system since we started the school district 26 years ago, Triana has part of that. So we've got to be able to spread that growth out evenly and that's one reason we really focused on developing this elementary school on our limestone county side."

About 27 percent of Madison City School students currently reside in Limestone County. "So this will help us to to spread out the overcrowding of our elementary schools. "
