Huntsville Hospital names Tracy Doughty as new president and COO

Senior Vice President of Huntsville Hospital Operations Tracy Doughty will assume the roles of President and Chief Operating Officer.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala — Senior Vice President of Huntsville Hospital Operations Tracy Doughty has been announced as the hospitals new President and Chief Operating Officer.

He will step into his new role replacing Jeff Samz as Samz takes over as CEO in Summer of 2021. Current CEO David Spillers is retiring from his post.

Doughty began his career at Huntsville Hospital in 1998. During his tenure here he has progressively served in a number of leadership roles, including the hospital’s employed physicians groups, emergency services, lab, radiology, disaster preparedness, pharmacy, surgical services, women and children’s services, inpatient/ outpatient departments and nursing. He has also worked in humans resources, strategic planning, and as a staff nurse in various departments. 

Doughty is a graduate of the University of North Alabama, earning a bachelor’s of science degree in Nursing in 1997. He later received two master’s degrees from The University of Alabama Birmingham -- one in Quality and Outcomes Management in Health Systems in 2004 and the other in Health Administration in 2007. 

“I am honored to move into this role and to help guide our hospital into the future,” said Doughty. “It’s a great privilege to serve on a team that is committed to ensuring patient safety and developing quality programs. For 125 years our hospital has focused on serving everyone in our community with healthcare services that they need. I am excited about continuing this legacy. I have worked with and learned from some of the brightest minds in healthcare and I will use those experiences to lead the hospital.” Doughty says he would continue to focus on engaging patients, employees and physicians, maintaining the financial health and stability of the organization, as well as advancing diversity and inclusion efforts.

In announcing Doughty’ s promotion, Samz said, “Tracy’s response to the current pandemic and his leadership style have helped our organization move through this trying time in a safe and effective manner. He is a well respected servant leader and his hands-on approach will serve him well in this role.” 

HHS says that Doughty is active in many local and regional organizations including: The University of North Alabama Foundation, The Committee of 100 - Board Member, Huntsville Housing Authority Advisory Board, Downtown Huntsville Inc., Calhoun Community College Foundation, and Huntsville Hospital’s representative on the Huntsville EMS (HEMSI) Board. Doughty is also a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the National Society of Health Services Executives. He is a graduate of Leadership Huntsville/Madison County and The Leadership Alabama Initiative. A native of Fayette, Alabama, Doughty also served as a Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years.
