HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The first two of three new dynamic message signs are set for installation next week along I-565.
Workers plan to install one of the digital panels Tuesday night over the westbound highway between County Line Road and Greenbrier Road. The second will be set in place Wednesday night over the eastbound lanes between Jordan Land and Memorial Parkway.
Expect significant traffic impacts from 8 p.m. through about 2 a.m. both nights. The contractor will close all lanes on one direction of the roadway, including nearby on-ramps, while crews lift structures and secure them to upright supports. Once the overhead structure is in place, the contractor will lift and install the message board and run wiring.
A third sign -- to be placed on I-565 westbound just before Jordan Lane -- will be installed at a later date.
State troopers and police will help manage traffic while workers put the signs in place.
“These message boards will provide real-time travel information to assist motorists, informing them of crashes, construction delays, and alternate routes,” said Phillip Day, ALDOT North Region Traffic Systems Management and Operations Coordinator.
Day said the new digital signs should be operational by the end of the year.
The message boards are part of an ongoing $5.2 million project designed to enhance technology along I-565.
That project began in the summer of 2023 and is nearing completion. It includes the addition of 10 traffic cameras and two weather stations that will help monitor traffic on the interstate highway.
