ATHENS, Ala. — Shoppers in Athens get ready for the grand opening of a new TJ Maxx store! The new Athens store will be located at 1061 Kelli Drive south of U.S. 72 will open its doors on Sunday, April 21, at 7 a.m.
Festivities set for the grand opening include a live DJ both inside and outside of the store, performances by the Athens High School Band, and a fashion show kicking off around 7:30 a.m. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be at 8 a.m., will also feature a donation to Habitat for Humanity of the River Valley.
People are invited to join in the festivities, with the store opening following the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks expressed enthusiasm for the new shopping option, noting it addresses a demand by residents while helping the city’s sales tax base.
“Sales tax makes up about 40 percent of our revenue so shopping local supports fire and police services, sanitation, parks, paving and other needs,” Marks said. “The more options we provide in Athens from small businesses to major chains, the less sales tax dollars leave our Athens.”
The new TJ Maxx store is part of a larger retail development project spearheaded by Noon Real Estate. Other stores set to open soon in the shopping center include Ross Dress for Less, Ulta, Five Below, and Rack Room Shoes. The project is expected to create 125 new jobs and generate annual taxable sales of approximately $20 million, according to project developers.
"The introduction of TJ Maxx to our community isn't merely about adding another store, it's about enriching our shopping landscape, fostering economic vitality, and enhancing our collective quality of life,” said Pammie Jimmar, president of the Athens-Limestone County Chamber of Commerce. “It's a testament to our growth in Athens-Limestone County."
